| Give a Dog a Bone |
| An environmental enrichment program for long-term shelter dogs created by Corinne Dowling for the dogs in forced long-term shelter care in the city and country of San Francisco's public animal shelter, Department of Animal Care and Control an open admissions shelter. This program is dedicated to providing daily quality of life for the animals in extended confinement by expanding their lives with physical, behavioral, and mental/emotional stimulation. Whether or not you have care and custody dogs, much can be learned and applied from Corinne's inspired work. "Of all the things we do with these animals, we've learned that what they want most is us". Corinne implements a host of innovative programs that can assist No-Kill shelters. In addition to a host of basic exercise and mental stimulation activities, Corinne has some unique ideas to share. For kennel stress she uses lavender oil on small sheet strips, Rescue Remedy (a homeopathic calming remedy), classical music, time consuming treats (stuffed kongs and rawhides) and posters on what would otherwise be cold bare walls. She is innovative about making exercise stimulating and enjoyable. She uses common objects to do agility and kiddy pools for extra fun. While dogs are in their kennel she employs interactive games such as catching treats in the air, T-touch, find-it games with immediate food rewards, hand an object targeting, and even hide-and-seek. Corinne has proven the benefits of physical and mental exercise and verbal
and manual stimulation with the positive behavioral changes she has documented
with the dogs in her program. To learn more about the Give a Dog a Bone program Email Corinne Dowling at |
