A SOUND MIND IN A SOUND BODY
When living and working with dogs of high energy and bright minds, the
need to keep them stimulated and occupied during their time in shelters
or rescue is a challenge. Here are some things that have made OUT OF THE
PITS a successful program.
Whenever possible, outside play is the most desirable, especially when
paired with an equal-size, equal-energy, opposite-sex playmate or an activity
toy when pairing dogs is not feasible.
Boomer balls of different sizes, kiddy pools and step boxes are all great
additions to outside areas.
Whenever possible, if experienced volunteers or local trainers are available,
obedience and agility participation are ideal.
While the dog is confined to an inside kennel, the Kong is a great tool
for keeping the dogs occupied, as well as Buster cubes and Galileo chews,
giving the dog "something to do". The Kong Seconds Program is
a way to incorporate Kongs at a minimum expense. (Kong, 1691-D Table Mt.
Parkway, Golden, CO 80403-1641, 303-216-2626). To stuff a Kong, an entire
meal can be inside. Kibble, small biscuits, or flip chips can all be used.
Peanut butter or cheese whiz is used to keep items inside, a spoonful
can be stirred in, then the end closed using a biscuit or just the peanut
butter or cheese whiz. Placed in the freezer, it makes a treat that occupies
dogs for quite a period of time. It also bounces and moves, so becomes
an activity as well. Be sure kongs are cleaned thoroughly after each use.
Housing, whenever possible, is best in low-stress areas; generous inside/outside
kennels are ideal. The greatest amount of activity and exercise are best
for this and other "working" breeds. Resting benches or even
just blankets are important as the Bull breeds are "creature comfort"
dogs. A softly played radio is a great addition as well.
These are some of the simple activity requirements, along with the human
love and inter-action, that Bulls needs that can make the days more smoother
and faster until they are in someone's loving home.
